What's Happening

Dear Readers

Welcome to the latest edition of the San Diego Participant Observer newsletter. Both our book and music suggestion for the month take a trip to the far North of Scandinavia to the homelands of the indigenous Sami. Stolen is a book by Ann-Helén Laestadius, an indigenous writer who is half-Sami herself. Set in northern Sweden, the book revolves around the killing of a young Sami girl's reindeer and her heroic efforts to obtain justice. The books is the Worldview Project Book Club's selection for June. It was also made into a Netflix movie, and the dialog is in the Sami language.

Our international music selection for this month is Uvjamuohta (Powder Snow) by Solju,. The Sami mother-daughter duo of Ulla Pirttijärvi-Länsman and her daughter Hildá Länsman wrote and sing original songs Northern Sami language.

Due to a time crunch, and inspired by a recent trip to northern Portugal, this month we are plunging into our archive of recipes to bring you a slightly revised version on our recipe for Caldo Verde and Broa de Milho (Green soup and corn/rye bread) which hails from the same Minho region we visited (and enjoyed this soup at a local taberna in Braga!).

Recipe of the Month

This month's recipe is for Caldo Verde. This potato-based green soup vies with Bacalhau (salted cod) for the title of Portugal’s national dish. Originating in the northern Minho region but enjoyed throughout the country, it is simple to prepare and made from readily available ingredients. Broa, a traditional corn-and-rye bread, is the customary accompaniment to this classic Portuguese comfort food.

CD of the Month

Our international music selection for this month is Uvjamuohta (Powder Snow) by Solju,. The mother-daughter duo of Ulla Pirttijärvi-Länsman and her daughter Hildá Länsman have infused their Northern Sámi heritage, language, and traditional style of music, known as Joik, with high-production modern music that has gained recognition throughout the international indigenous music community. The artists come from the northernmost municipality of Finland in Utsokji, Lapland which is located above the Arctic Circle in the indigenous region of Northern Sápmi.

Book of the Month

Our international book suggestion for this month is Stolen by Ann-Helén Laestadius. TA spellbinding Swedish novel that follows a young indigenous woman as she struggles to defend her family’s reindeer herd and culture amidst xenophobia, climate change, and a devious hunter whose targeted kills are considered mere theft in the eyes of the law.
